As we wrap up our winterim in California, we’ve had many delicious treats for breakfast, lunch, dinner. We would eat in famous places such as In & Out, The Hard Rock, and even went to a diner that was endorsed by Guy Fieri. Besides that, we also went to fancy restaurants for Italian, pizza, and much more. Also, we treated ourselves with desert with places like Baskin Robbins, and the famous chocolate place called Ghirardelli Chocolate. We were all together, and we got to enjoy some delicious food as well. Personally, my favorite out of all of these was probably the Italian restaurant, because we ordered many foods like chicken parmesan, many kinds of pastas, meatballs, and so much more. California had many kinds of foods, as we ate a lot of everything that was available.

The winterim was approximately ten days long unless you included the time at school and over that brief period of time, we learned a monotonous amount of information about silicon valley and coding technology starting in the 60’s. Our trip started on the early morning of monday where we woke up around 3:30am to took a 2 and ½ hour drive to JFK. After that we spent a nimble amount of time roaming around the airport and going through security. We arrived in Silicon Valley on a bright and content day waiting for Mr. Christie to come with the van. We headed to the hotel while being in awe due to how sunny and warm it was compared to Litchfield, Connecticut. That night we went to “In and Out” which was where most of us experienced our first taste of that fast food place. The rest of the trip will take a long time to explain and I shall tell you in detail what they were like.
Day two, I remember we woke up sometime around 8 and had our first breakfast at the food place, starbucks. We had sandwiches and water and then we went to the main town nearby where we visited Adobe headquarters. After this we walked around and saw some paint art at the streets of the town. We headed to a museum which was mainly based on the topic of science and in there we experience a multitude of things such as 3D reality, computer-based simulation games, and human body models. After this, we went to a food place for lunch nearby and headed to watch a Imax movie about bears. That night we watched a hockey game where the ending score was 4 - 2, the Shark’s won. The next day we woke up early to go to a computer museum that opens at 10 but is an hour drive away not including traffic. It was an amazing museum which had many models of early computer machines and was an amazing place. You could learn a fascinating amount of things there if you were to read everything. After this museum, we ate lunch and then took a walk to google headquarters where we went to the gift store. We took a long semi-long walk back to the van and we headed to a naval base which was very cool. We went to their museum where we experienced an awesome tour by some veterans and got to experience a lot. At the end of the day, we ate at a very nice restaurant and had an abundance of food. The fourth day we went on a long drive to the national redwood park and we saw some of the biggest trees in the world. The drive there was long and time consuming, due to how the road was so curvy. We got to walk around the park and experienced a very cool time. After this, we drove to Stanford and took a tour of their very nice campus. We got to go to the book store there and we had a very fun time and spent most of it walking around. At the end of the day, we went to facebook but couldn't get in due to unfortunate events. We went to Willow Street Pizza and ate some delicious pizza and then went to sleep. The next day we drove to San Francisco where we went to Pier 39 to eat some of their food. After this, we went on a boat that gave a tour of the golden gate bridge and we got to go past Alcatraz and see what the island was like. After this we had some free time so we got to roam the streets which was fun till 4 o’clock. During this time we explored a lot and had an exuberant time. In addition to all of this visited a arcade which had some very old machines and we had a blast there. That night we went to a Hard Rock Cafe and ate some burgers. We then went to a very long dock which had many food places to eat some more and then headed to sleep. The next day we slept in a bit and went back to silicon valley where we drove to the Apple's new headquarters. We got to go to their store and saw many cool things there. After this, we went back to the hotel and had free time. The next couple of days were somewhat empty since some of our tours were canceled due to coronavirus. We woke up and went to a flea market which in retrospect had many cool things and was a very fun experience. We spent about an hour and maybe some more time there roaming the big area seeing what they sold. That night it was McPhee’s birthday so we got him some birthday ice cream. The next day we visited UCSC who mascot was a banana slug which was cool. We experienced what their campus was like and got to roam a lot while there. In addition, we visited their book store and saw some of their merch. That morning for breakfast, we all had burritos which were very good but just took a long time to make in the cold of the morning. After the college visit, we went to a beach which we didn't get to swim at and a mini amusement park. We roamed there a bit and it was very fun and not too crowded. After this we went to a state park beach where we had fun. We went to an old fashioned American dinner after the state park beach where we were all stuffed to the max with food. Our last full day at California, we are spending it by doing work for our trip and making questions for our interview with two different people and finishing a blog post. The next day we are going to take a plane ride early in the morning back to JFK! The trip that I had experienced was a very fun one for me, and I believe that everyone else enjoyed the trip too. We had many fun times like going to the redwoods and visiting San Francisco and I would say in addition to this I have learned about technology. The google museum of technology taught me the most but it was also very interesting. Eating on the trip was very tasty and we got to have many fun times. Those were some of the great parts of the trip and while there were some few bad times the good outweighs the bad by a lot. This is all I can say about the trip to California. I would say I had an amazing time here and everyone else could agree with me. Overall the trip was super fun and we got to learn a lot about the history of the place and what it was like to live here. Since our tour of Intel has been canceled for tomorrow we will start our day with resting and recharging before a day of travel on the 11th. The students will have a sleep in before meeting in the lobby at 9:45. After we will focus on writing the interview questions for the guest speakers for when we arrive back on campus. In addition, students will focus on packing and organizing so they are prepared for the journey home.

Today we went to Santa Cruz and obtained breakfast at a local restaurant. After we ate, we went to see UC Santa Cruz. Our self guided tour of the campus was beautiful. I had the opportunity to see the educational aspects and the campus. Stanford and UC Santa Cruz had very different campuses. Then we went to the Natural Bridge's State Beach, very scenic and had a nice breeze. After the beach, we went back to San Josè to the hotel. By Russell George
March 8th was a successful day of winterim. The day commenced with a late sleep in. I awoke at 9 and met with the rest of the group at 9:30 in the Wyndham Garden hotel lobby. We began the day with delicious Starbucks drinks and sandwiches. I had a sausage egg and cheese on an english muffin accompanied by a venti iced chai tea latte. Upon finishing our meals, we drove straight to the world famous San Jose flea market, where we spent the next hour. We all split up into several smaller groups and began our adventure through the market. Leonard, McPhee, Brandon, Milo, and I grouped together. We roamed the market for some time, however we did not make any purchases. The group met up in the parking lot, got back into the van, and drove to the Westfield Oakridge shopping center. Once we arrived, we split up into small groups and began shopping. Leonard, Mcfee, Brandon, Milo, and I roamed the mall in search for cool things to buy, however no purchases were made. We had a rendezvous with the rest of the group in the food court and began the pursuit for nourishment. After we ate we went to the hotel then went to dinner then went to sleep By: Brandon de Pena
Today we had a very travel-filled day. The main goal of the day was to visit the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA. At the beginning of the day, we acquired some breakfast at our hotel called the Zhyper and after that, we packed our van and headed to the Apple headquarters. When we arrived at the headquarters we saw the world-famous Apple donut which is the newest building. We also visited their visitor center which was an Apple store with a cafe. After we finished at Apple we got back in the van to travel back to our first hotel in San Jose. Once we got back to the hotel we unpacked and relaxed for the rest of the day. Today was a very relaxed day for our winterim. By: Milo Carter

Today we went to some cool places. We visited Stanford and it was a very nice campus. We went into a big tower which allowed us to see the whole campus from higher up. We also attempted to visit Facebook but unfortunately we could not get in. The best trip of the day was the trip to the redwood forests. It took a while to get there but it was very worth it. The trees were enormous and so tall you could barely see the top. The biggest one there was 16 feet and 10 inches in diameter. Overall the day was pretty good and I'd say it was a success. Today we went to the Computer History Museum. We got to tour the museum and see a bunch of old technology like old typewriters, computers, and much more. We went to Google and saw the gift store and all of the buildings they own. In addition, we saw the Android Park. Next, we went to Nasa to see the Moffett Field Museum. We saw many examples of the uniforms and guns people would wear to war. We saw many aircrafts on display. We also went to the Nasa gift store. Tonight we went to a cute Italian restaurant. They gave us fried mozzarella, Cesar salad, then options for our main course. It was good food. By: Nia Avraamides
Today we had breakfast at Starbucks. After that we walked around Silicon Valley and went to the Tech Museum. Next, we went to Target to get some snacks and drinks. Before we went to the hockey game, we had some time at the hotel to rest and recharge. Now we are going to watch a Sharks vs. Maple Leafs game. My favorite memory was in the Tech Museum spawning and punching the animals away. I am looking forward to the Computer History Museum tomorrow. |
